FIRST MILESTONES

NO BABY FOOD FOR ME

Smith Alexander Boyd... otherwise known as Smitty B... skipped eating baby food altogether. Every spoonful of creamy veggies or fruit came right back out of his mouth.

"Smitty B., what are you eating?" I asked.

He grinned as my daughter, Morgan, gave him bites of guacamole.

"Don't ask me why, but it's his favorite," Morgan said. "It's right up there with chocolate cake and ice cream." She giggled.

Seeing food all over Smitty B.'s face melted my heart! Becoming a grandparent was a thrill for me and my husband, Cy. We could not wait to be called 'Lolly' and 'Pop.'

Of course Smitty B.'s first words were 'Mama' and 'Dada.' Cy and I waited to hear our names called out by this precious bundle.

Finally the day came, and Smitty B. started with "Pop... Pop... Pop."

I held him, kissed him, and said, "Lolly loves you."

"Pop... Pop... Pop."

Every day... "Pop... Pop... Pop."

Smitty B. loves to say Pop," Morgan told us. "Your turn will come, Mom."

It's been a while. I'm still waiting...

When a grandchild arrives, there seems to be time to marvel at the growth and wonder of this miraculous being. Young parents work so hard to make a future for their families that many memories of childhood become a blur in the bustle of day to day. All children are blessings, but grandchildren are God's bonus blessings. I watch, smile, and ask… THE KID DID WHAT?
