"Those aren't the rules!" Dax runs into the family room, crying.
Grey walks in, rolling his eyes. He has been babysitting his little brother so I can get a few things done. His patience astounds me at times.
"We're playing 'The Balloon Game' and Grey keeps breaking the rules." Dax plops down on the floor and crosses his arms, wailing.
"Okay, you two," I say. "If you can't play nicely, I don't want to take you to the water park tomorrow."
Grey immediately holds out his arms to his baby brother.
"Come here, Daxie. Tell me what the problem is, and we'll fix it."
Dax burrows his head into Grey and hugs him tight.

"You're supposed to let me make up the rules to 'The Balloon Game.'"
"You are," Grey says. "You just keep changing the rules as we go."
"Well, the biggest rule is... I always win."
Grey gives me a look. "Okay," he says. "You can win."
"Thank you," I mouth to Grey.
"I'm not doing this for you," Grey says. "I want to go to the water park."

Kindness... empathy... determination... are all parts of a child's whole. A loving act can still produce a wish fulfilled. Kids always amaze me and make me laugh. I wonder what will come next...
